« In this demo I’m going to tell you about temperatures to be used for full wraps. There are basically three temperatures that are of interest to us. The first temperature is ambient temperature 25 degrees centigrade. The ideal temperature for a wrap is between 20 and 25 degrees. The second temperature, is the temperature at which we stretch the vinyl. At 20, 25 degrees I can’t stretch the vinyl properly. This means the temperature for stretching varies between 40 and 60 degrees. Note the ripples that disappear quickly. It indicates the correct temperature of the vinyl. I bring the heat up. Here I am at about 50 degrees. This is the temperature at which the vinyl can be shaped. I slightly stretch the vinyl which could be to wrap it over a rear-view mirror. When you do a wrap, you don’t want to expose the car to direct sunlight before the vinyl polymerises. »
Heating to 90°C
« Why is that so? Because the vinyl will revert to its original shape. This is what we call the memory of the vinyl. This is very important. It is used all the time when wrapping. And the third temperature, is the temperature at which we break the memory of the vinyl. This is the final step and must not be neglected. I am going to raise the heat. It’s important to apply heat and take the temperature nearby. Here, I’m at around 85 degrees and I’m going to do another heat-up at 90 to at the most 100 degrees. That’s not a problem. I check, I apply heat and I do the same wrap again. We have two identical wraps at two different temperatures. The first temperature between 80 and 85 degrees. Vinyl retracts immediately. The second temperature between 90 and 100 degrees. I raise the heat, the vinyl will not retract due to the 90-degree temperature. The vinyl has been set. This is what we call breaking the memory of the vinyl. This is an important step that must not be overlooked and it’s the last step in the wrapping process. To show you the efficiency of heating to 90 degrees to break the memory if I heat the vinyle again, I will shape it the stretching disappears. If I heat again the vinyl will come back because of its memory, the memory of the vinyl. But where I’ve heated it up, the vinyl doesn’t come back. You can easily see that the heating at 90 degrees will break the memory, it’s the last step in the wrapping process. This is very important and must not be neglected to ensure your wrap stays in place. »
